Impermanence
A Yearlong Exploration

February 1–December 31, 2020

“Impermanence does not necessarily lead to suffering. What makes us suffer is wanting things to be permanent when they are not.” —Thich Nhat Hanh

Impermanence is the idea that everything changes. It’s a fundamental principle that unites us all. At the Rubin in 2020 we’re bringing together a full year of exhibitions, talks, programs, and experiences that explore how to navigate a shifting world and open ourselves up to change.

Drawing on a diverse range of sources and perspectives—from contemporary art to scientific theories to Buddhist philosophies—the Rubin will explore the freedom and ease that comes from letting go of expectations and consciously living in the present.

This journey begins outside the Museum. Through the windows see fruit tattooed by artist Amanda Wachob. With designs inspired by artworks in the Rubin’s collection, the fruit will shift, shrink, and decompose throughout the year. Inside the Museum, encounter delightful nods to the theme throughout, even in the shop, where the Rubin’s Impermanence fragrance is for sale. Find the full list of exhibitions and programs below.

Join us this year at the Rubin Museum as we explore change and transformation, feeling empowered and more connected.
